Why a business licence is not one thing
There is no single "US business licence". What you need depends on what you sell, where you do it and who regulates it. A company can need permission from the federal government, the state, the county and the city at the same time, and each one has its own form, fee and renewal date.
The four levels

Two things people mix up
- A business licence is not a formation filing. Forming an LLC creates the company. A licence lets that company operate.
- A sales tax permit is not a licence. If you sell taxable goods or services, you may need to register to collect sales tax with the state. It is a separate registration with separate returns.
Do online and remote businesses need one?
Often yes, if the company has a presence in a state or city: an office, a person, inventory or a home base. A founder who lives abroad and sells digital services to clients may need very little. A company that holds stock or hires staff in a state usually needs more. This is why the first step is to find out what applies, not to buy a licence.
How to work out what you need
- Write down exactly what the company will do and where.
- Check the state's business portal for general and industry-specific requirements.
- Check the city and county where the business has any physical presence.
- Note every renewal date, since most licences renew yearly.
What happens if you skip it
The usual result is fines and late fees, and in some cases a stop on operating until you comply. A missing licence can also cause trouble when you apply for a bank account or a loan.
